  4. The setting in the book The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is the High School. Although it doesn’t always take place there it is an important aspect to the book. The High School is like any other it filled with students of all kinds. The high school is so important to the whole book because thats how the whole book develops. With out having Charlie (the main character) in High School as a freshman it would change up the story. Him being a freshman in High School develops him to discover the world of having to talk to new people and make friends and dealing with things such as drama. If you put him in middle school it would be different because there are certain things you learn in High School that you don’t learn in middle school. Having him be in college would also change the story because he would more control and would sefisticated and wouldn’t be such a mess like if your High School. That’s why the setting in this book is important to the rest of the story.

  8. Spoilers–
The setting in When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is in a small neighborhood in New York. The neighborhood includes a school, buildings, and a busy street set in the late 1970’s. When 12 year old Miranda witnesses her friend Sal get hit by a random kid on the street, she starts receiving strange notes from an anonymous source. At the same time, Sal ignores her on a daily basis and she befriends Marcus, the kid who hit Sal. The notes all say the same thing, leading her to think that only she can save a friend. Later that year, Marcus decides to apologize to Sal, and runs after him. Sal is terrified of Marcus at this point, continues to run from him. He doesn’t realize that he’s headed towards a busy street until he spots the truck headed straight towards him. At the same time, the Laughing Man runs to the middle of the street, giving Sal one strong kick as the truck hits himself instead. The Laughing Man was no other than Marcus’s older self, time traveling back to the past to save Miranda’s best friend.
If this book had a different setting, there would have been a different turn out of events. For example, if the this story were set in a small town or countryside instead of New York, there would have been no truck for Sal to run into. The Laughing Man or Marcus, who was always under the mailbox, wouldn’t be able to roam the streets of New York without getting unnoticed. His plan to save Sal would have been flawed.
Plus, living in the countryside would have meant different means of transportation since people live so far apart. The only reason Sal got hit was because he was walking back home from school (therefore defenseless) and because Marcus only happened to live on the street. If the kids took a bus or rode in a car, Sal wouldn’t get hit in the first place.
If this story took place earlier, like in the 1800’s, there would be no Laughing Man to save Sal. The Laughing Man time traveled back to the ’70’s with the help of modern technology 30-40 years later. If Marcus, Sal, and Miranda lived in the 1800’s, the older Marcus could not have found the technology that allowed him to go back to the past. The equipment just wasn’t available at that time.

    • Hi Kelly,
I also read When You Reach Me this summer. In this book the setting is very important because it talks a lot of the things that happened in the book wouldn’t of happened. Since in your comment you talk about if it was in the 1800s there would no laughing man, etc, Do you think if at a different time period Sal and Marcus would’ve acted differently towards each other? Or would they have acted differently in the big situation of the book where Marcus chases Sal?

Through the story they do travel a lot and the setting does change. However most of the story takes place in North Carolina. In this story the weather is an important. The weather goes from very hot from very cold. The home are very close to each other which makes it very easy to interact with others. The park is located in front of the house were the characters live and spend a lot of time playing sports.

I am onto Chapter 5 and so far I have learned that Hazel lives in Indianapolis,Indiana with her parents at the age of 16. Hazel has thyroid cancer and can’t breathe with her lungs. I would say that living in Indiana is actually a therapy almost because Indiana is a rural place with lots of land and the land includes trees so trees gives alot of oxygen and the oxygen may help Hazel learn to breathe on her own since that oxygen is really useful. The setting helps the story because it is very calm (I know all of this from experience in Indiana) and Hazel as a cancer patient needs to be in a calm environment to make sure she is calm at all times and doesn’t worry which can be very bad for her and her lungs.

The setting of my book, When You Reach Me, is in New York City in 1979. Most of time spent throughout one year is in Jimmy’s sandwich shop, school, and the streets of Miranda’s neighborhood. Miranda often talks about two spots. The street where the house on the corner that has boys who are rude and mean and the corner where the crazy man was. Her apartment building was also a big part of the setting because that is where Miranda got her first note. The street with the house of boys that are mean and rude is an important part of the story because that is where Miranda’s friend Sal gets punched and tells Miranda he doesn’t want to be friends anymore. If Sal wouldn’t of gotten punched he wouldn’t of ran away from Marcus (the kid who punched Sal) and Miranda wouldn’t of known who was writing her the notes and their a story because the note says it is to save a friends life. If Sal and Miranda didn’t live in the apartments where they had to cross the street the story wouldn’t the story wouldn’t of happened because Sal getting punched is a big part of the story that is brought up again and again. As well, the crazy man is brought up a lot and he gives Miranda clues and ideas to solve her problem. Maybe if the crazy man wasn’t there, her future with her best friend would be gone and she wouldn’t of gotten those notes.

It’s just in a regular school with classes and lockers in the hallway. The setting is very important to the story. If this book had a different setting it would change the way a reader would predect what will happen next.

The setting Is mostly taken placed in the cold weather of Massachusetts , mainly in Boston but later in other areas of the 13 colonies (New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia) during 1775-1783. The war included lots of diversity and countries fighting in the war such as the Germans, French, and Spaniards. If the war had’t token place in American where the landscape included fine hills, trees, grasslands, and rivers then how would have American gotten their weapons to fight the British? If the war was token overseas, Great Britain then America wouldn’t have an advantage over Britain where America had barely any allies in Europe because many places in Europe felt threaten by Britain’s power. Overall America would had less food supplies, shelter, storage space, and weapons especially during the 1750s where there were not a lot of transportation systems to bring the so little American soldiers America had because American had a less population than Britain and again had barely any allies.

  16. Hi, so I recently finished the book Gone Girl. Although there’s no specific setting. I would say the couples house in North,Carthage,Missouri. The setting is essential to the story because it gives the perfect layout for what happened. Without the quiet town the reaction from towns people and neighbors would’ve been completely different. This setting gives the perfect effect or possible cause of what happened to Amy{the fake kidnapping}. The story would change in a different setting because in a different setting Nick might have not found a woman to cheat on Amy with, and Amy might have not been able o get away with this if it was a more populated town which would have effected everything.

The Series Pendragon each book has a different timeline and different place in Halla, but maybe if Pendragon was at coral ( a place in Halla ) while the hidenburg issue was supposed to happen in First earth then everything would have happened either way and would have led up to the Convergence ,because even when pendragon saved some places in Halla they would have led to their second tuning point which would have still led to the convergence ,but the antagonist ( saint Dane ) said something close to saying that no matter how many places pendragon saves it’ll be useless because no matter how many battles you win it doesn’t make a difference against a war which pendragon was doing he was saving different parts of halla but the real win would be the convergence taking place in second Earth ( present Earth),but i think to be honest if Pendragon was changed to a different part in Halla instead of where he needed to be not only would he blame himself for not arriving in time but he would also have probably gave up and not been led to second earth where the convergence finally happens so him being in a different setting would have led to the downfall of halls and everyone in conclusion.

  24. In the book The War To End All Wars by Russell Freedman the setting is during World War I. Although it started on July of 1914 the book starts with June 28,1914 when they first began to attack with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. The book takes place during the years of 1914-1918. Through-out the book their is no specific setting because they talk about the different conflicts there were but it starts in Sarajevo. In this book the setting is the most important thing because that is what the book is based around. If the setting was based in the year of 2008 then they wouldn’t be talking about World War I they would be talking about a whole different thing. If it was in the years of 1937 then maybe it would be based around World War II but if we change the setting then we are changing the whole book. Without the setting there really isn’t a book based around World War I that’s why in this book the setting is very important.

And without the setting there would be no point to the story and it provides the language that story provides. (like old time terms) and there would be no war, and if there where no war Sam wouldn’t run away to join the patriots. They would describe the chores that they would do like milking the cow and how Tim’s (the main character) family owned a tavern and all the work keeping it together. they also mentioned things like cowboys, cattle, and fishing. And if the setting changed of the story there would probably be no war.

The house had a back door that led to the back fence of the concentration site. The setting nearly created the story. It provided the possibilities bruno wanted (exploration). If this wasn’t the setting Bruno wouldn’t have met Schmuel, they wouldn’t have became friends/best friends, Schmuel wouldn’t have gotten the food he desired, and Bruno wouldn’t have died because that passage way created the way to th concentration camp, If that passage way wasn’t here he would have never met Schmuel and the idea of Bruno helping him find his father wouldn’t have been put out there. Therefore he would’ve been alive.

If district 12 wasn’t destroyed the citizens would be stuck there because, they don’t like it there. Katniss would have expected her family there but, that’s not the way it happened.

I think this setting is very important because if it was different the people might not act the same as they did and the government wouldn’t have ruled over them. For example if the districts were not poor and helpless the government might have not had the same authority to make the games. If this change was made the story of Katniss would not have been the same as we know it by.

I think this setting is important because it keeps the factors of the last hunger games arena and builds more on top of it to make it unique and not the same thing we experienced last hunger games. Also this setting leaves us off on the after math of the last book so if it was any different the story might have not made any sense.

The important setting of my book ‘The Boy In The Striped Pajamas’ is in Auschwitz Germany. It was in the time of world war 2 and they lived close to the concentration camps. The Jews were only wearing on kind of clothes and had no shoes. His friend Shmuel tells him how they aren’t feed. The place is in terrible condition and Jews treated like objects. The important thing about this setting is that it is when Bruno learns about the real world and getting to learn many not that great things. He learns many things by his friend that he knows that is in the other side of the fence and at the end it’s sad how they were innocent yet had to suffer. If the book had a different setting then all of what happened would have been more peaceful and many things would change.

It all started when a man from Serbia killed the ruler of the Austria-Hungary country which made a huge effect into the war. This is an important setting because if WW1 took place in 2015 technology would been more advanced then by WW2 technology would have been incredibly advanced. If it took place in a different continent lass destruction or more destruction would have occurred. To fix the country continent it could have cost more money or less money depending on the economy the country has.

  40. Lord of the Nutcracker Men is based during World War 1 in Cliffe, England. As well, the book talks about France and London. Johnny lived in London but then his father joined the army so Johnny’s mom took him to live with his aunt in Cliffe while his father was in war. Johnny spends most of his time in the garden where he makes his battlefield of his father. The setting is essential to the story because Johnny and the nutcracker men decide who attacks or who dies with having the setting as his fathers. This makes Johnny realize that he controls the armies destiny and tries not to do things that can hurt the English army. The story would change in a different setting because if Johnny lived in a different place his dad wouldn’t of gone to war and if it was a different time maybe the dad wouldn’t of been a toy maker. Maybe Johnny wouldn’t of had his nutcracker men.

I have just finished reading the book friends with boys by: Faith Erin Hicks, the setting in this book is a small town in a high school with cliques, rivalries, broken friendships, and graveyards. this all revolves around one girl and her secret, she is being haunted by a ghost from the 18th century. The setting adds to how the story is told, without having a setting there wouldn’t be a very essential background to cover it and the story would have been based off…well nothing. The story would change if the setting was different because if Maggie’s mother didn’t leave and Maggie and her brothers were still homeschooled then, Maggie wouldn’t have dug deeper into the ghost story she, she wouldn’t have met Alistair and Lucy and they would have lived their separate lives.
